Complete guide
Getting started with SparkyLog
A complete walkthrough for self-employed electricians using SparkyLog for the first time. Covers everything from opening the app to creating invoices, logging mileage, and printing your tax report at year end.
1Opening SparkyLog for the first time
SparkyLog runs entirely in your web browser — there’s nothing to download or install. You can open it on your phone, tablet, or laptop and it works the same on all of them.
- Open your browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox — any will work) and go to sparkylog.app
- Tap Open App or Start free to launch SparkyLog
- You’ll be taken to the login screen. Tap Create account if this is your first time
Available in: UK, USA, Canada, Ireland and Australia. Mileage rates, currency and tax terminology adapt automatically to your country.
2Creating your account
- Enter your email address and create a password
- Enter your name and business name (this appears on invoices)
- Enter your NICEIC or NAPIT registration number (UK) or your state/provincial licence number (USA/Canada/Australia/Ireland)
- Select your country — this sets your currency, mileage rate, and tax terminology
- Tap Create account — you’re in
3Understanding the dashboard
| Dashboard figure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Income | Total invoiced this month |
| Received | Payments confirmed as paid |
| Outstanding | Invoices sent but not yet paid |
| Expenses | Costs logged against jobs + business expenses |
| Mileage | Total HMRC/IRS/ATO claim accumulated this tax year |
| Profit (est.) | Income minus expenses and mileage deduction |
4Adding a job
- Tap + New Job from the dashboard or the Jobs tab
- Enter the customer name — or start typing to pull from saved clients
- Enter the job address
- Select the job type — Consumer unit, EV charger, Rewire, First fix, Second fix, Test & inspect, Fault finding, or General
- Add a brief description, set the date, and enter the agreed price (or leave blank)
- Tap Save job
5Adding costs to a job
- Open a job and tap Add cost
- Select the category: Materials, Cable, Tools, Test equipment, Subcontractor, Van hire, Parking, Certification, or Other
- Enter a description and the amount, then Save cost
You can also log business expenses not tied to a specific job — NICEIC annual fees, tool purchases, public liability insurance renewal, accountant fees.
6Marking a job as done and logging mileage
- Open the job and tap Mark complete
- Enter the miles driven (round trip)
- SparkyLog calculates your claim: 45p/mile (first 10,000 miles, UK), 25p/mile after
7Adding a quote
- Tap + New Quote from the Quotes tab or dashboard
- Select or enter the customer name and address
- Add a clear description, the quoted price, and validity period (typically 30 days)
- Tap Save & Preview, then Send to email or Print to hand over on site
Not sure how to price it? See How to Quote Electrical Jobs and Win More of Them.
8Finding a job
Use the Jobs tab search bar (customer, address, or description), the status filter (All / Active / Complete / Invoiced / Outstanding), and the date filter to narrow your list.
9Quotes in detail
| Status | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Sent | Awaiting response | Follow up day 3 if no reply |
| Accepted | Customer confirmed | Convert to job with one tap |
| Declined | Went elsewhere | No action needed |
| Expired | Validity passed | Resend if relevant |
The right follow-up cadence: one message on day 3 if no reply, one final message on day 7. After that, move on.
10Saving customers
Tap Clients → + New client. Save name, address, email, phone and any notes. Their details will auto-fill next time you create a job or quote.
11Week view
Tap Week to see all scheduled jobs laid out Monday to Sunday. Open the week view every Sunday evening to check what’s booked and spot any gaps.
12Upgrading to Pro
Go to Settings → Subscription → Upgrade to Pro — £9.99/month. Unlocks unlimited jobs, NICEIC/NAPIT invoices, the tax report, and quote-to-job conversion.
13Creating an invoice PRO
Open the completed job, tap Create invoice, check the details, set payment terms, then Send by email or Print. Your NICEIC or NAPIT number is pre-filled automatically.
14The tax report PRO
| Report line | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Total income | All invoiced amounts for the date range |
| Total business expenses | All costs logged — job costs + general expenses |

| Net profit (estimate) | Income minus expenses minus mileage deduction |
